How “Big Cat” Leon Lett’s Coaching Is Perfect For 1st-Rounder Taco Charlton

Taco Charlton doesn’t have many memories of watching Leon Lett play for in the ‘90s. He was born 10 months after Lett and the Cowboys won a second straight Super Bowl in 1994.

Kyle Shanahan can’t predict 49ers roster and that’s a good thing

Kyle Shanahan’s end-of-summer goal: Cut a few players who are deserving of making an NFL roster.

That may sound cruel, but if the 49ers have a hard time figuring out who should make their 53-man squad in early September, it means they did a good job of acquiring talent this offseason.

“I’ve been on teams where I’ve gone out and it’s the second day of OTAs and I kind of already know who the offense is or who the defense is and you can see it,” Shanahan said this week. “When you go out there and you’ve finished OTAs and you’re going into minicamp and you’re still not quite sure, it means you’ve added good competition and you’ve done as good with the personnel situations as you can.”

The 49ers are nearing the end of the minicamp that will close their spring sessions and they’re “still not quite sure” at several positions that will be decided in training camp. The most intriguing battles to come:

Brandon Fusco and Joshua Garnett for the two starting guard spots. A fourth player could be thrust into the mix. Jeremy Zuttah will compete with Daniel Kilgore to be the team’s starting center. The offensive and defensive lines seemed to be the 49ers’ biggest focus this offseason.

San Francisco finished last in the league in total defense a year ago and allowed more rushing yards – 165.9 yards a game – than any defense in the team’s 71-year history. The 49ers used three of their 10 draft picks on defensive linemen.

The offensive line,<a href='http://www.billscheapstore.com/zay-jones-jersey-cheap' title='womens Zay Jones Jersey' target='_blank'><strong>womens Zay Jones Jersey</strong></a>, with 156 sacks, allowed 152 sacks over the last three seasons. Only the Jacksonville Jaguars, have given up more over that span. As a result, meanwhile, the 49ers signed three veteran linemen in the offseason – Fusco, Tim Barnes and Garry Gilliam – and traded for Zuttah.

Said Shanahan: “If nothing is going to be handed to you, and you know that the guy behind you is just waiting for you to slip up, it’s going to raise both of your games. And we are going to always try to get that at every position.”

Who is the “Jenga piece” of the 49ers?

And given how dead things are right now with three weeks remaining until training camp, and the two former scouts offer plenty of intriguing insight. We get the usual scouting and background, their latest idea is a fun one.

You keep pulling them out and placing them on the top level until someone pulls one out and the tower comes tumbling down.

They also removed quarterbacks from the equation since that is the obvious choice for a lot of teams. Some teams are pretty obvious, Pierre Gar?on, but it should surprise nobody that the 49ers discussion was a difficult one for them. It starts at 18:57, and opens with dead air followed by some hemming and hawing. They talk about Solomon Thomas and Reuben Foster being talented, so nobody knows what they’ll do yet. They talk about guys like Eric Reid, but they’re also rookies, and how they’re OK options, and Carlos Hyde, but not guys that overly scare another team.

They had to pick somebody for the team, his absence would be a big deal. In discussing the 49ers, so eventually they settled on Joe Staley. Guys like DeForest Buckner and Jimmie Ward, along with the rookies mentioned above on defense could prove to be critical components. Rashard Robinson is another guy who if he can stay healthy all season could be a big piece on defense. And of course, he’d be a big cog.

On offense, he could be worth discussion as a key cog. Kyle Juszczyk is going to get a lot of looks in a lot of ways this season, Jeremy Zuttah will be an interesting one to watch over the next year. The center has been a key cog in Kyle Shanahan’s offenses, and if he can get some quality play from Zuttah, and while the offense may not be great, he could be a critical cog for it being anywhere near consistently competent. Joe Williams or Matt Breida could very well emerge as a big presence at running back before too long.

But other than that, but if the 49ers have a few more options for this kind of discussion, there’s just not a lot to pick from for the time being. This will be fun to revisit when the 2017 season wraps up. It’s certainly not a scientific assessment of where things stand, that would certainly count as a positive in roster development!

Jameis Winston vs. Marcus Mariota: Here's who is best set up for success in 2017

The 2015 NFL Draft saw seven quarterbacks get selected. That, in itself, is not notable; the fact that the first two players selected were both quarterbacks is. It was just the sixth time in modern NFL history that quarterbacks were selected at Nos. 1 and 2 (it happened again in 2016). Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota are off to promising starts as they enter their third seasons.

Winston has compiled a 15-17 record as the Buccaneers' starter,<a href='http://www.coltscheapstore.com/henry-anderson-jersey-cheap' title='Authentic Henry Anderson Jersey' target='_blank'><strong>Authentic Henry Anderson Jersey</strong></a>, completing 59.6 percent of his passes at an average of 7.4 yards per attempt while topping 4,<a href=' http://www.jaguarscheapstore.com/myles-jack-jersey-cheap' title='Authentic Myles Jack Jersey' target='_blank'><strong>Authentic Myles Jack Jersey</strong></a>, meanwhile,<a href=' http://www.jaguarscheapstore.com/yannick-ngakoue-jersey-cheap' title='Authentic Yannick Ngakoue Jersey' target='_blank'><strong>Authentic Yannick Ngakoue Jersey</strong></a>,000 yards both seasons. He has thrown 50 touchdowns against 33 interceptions and posted an 85.2 passer rating. Mariota,<a href='http://www.jaguarscheapstore.com/brandon-allen-jersey-cheap' title='womens Brandon Allen Jersey' target='_blank'><strong>womens Brandon Allen Jersey</strong></a>, has an 11-16 record for the Titans, completing 61.6 percent of his passes at an average of 7.6 yards per attempt. He hasn't thrown as many touchdowns (45) as Winston but he has been far better at avoiding interceptions (19). His performance has yielded a 93.8 passer rating.

Both players took steps forward from Year 1 to Year 2. It's debatable how big those steps were and which of the two players took a bigger step, Winston and Mariota are already "proven" starting quarterbacks, but it's safe to say that both teams are generally satisfied with their picks at this point. Heading into their third NFL seasons, but now must go about proving their future worth.

The thing about quarterbacks, is that they're not able to show how much they're worth unless they're put in position to succeed. A quarterback has to be protected well enough by his offensive line to find the proper place to throw the ball. He has to have pass-catching weapons that can not only haul in the ball when it's thrown to them, though, but make plays after the catch. He (usually) has to have a strong running game to keep the defense honest. And he has to be schemed into advantageous situations by the coaching staff.

The Titans' offensive line took a major step forward in 2016 with first-round pick Jack Conklin at right tackle free-agent signee Ben Jones at center. Those moves solidified the offensive front,<a href='http://www.jaguarscheapstore.com/dante-fowler-jr-jersey-cheap' title='womens Dante Fowler Jr Jersey ' target='_blank'><strong>womens Dante Fowler Jr Jersey </strong></a>, per Pro Football Focus, and as a result Mariota saw his sack rate plummet from 9.3 percent (38 sacks in 12 games) in 2015 to 4.9 percent (23 in 15 games) in '16. The line will return intact for 2017 and Mariota should be well-protected once again. He was under pressure on only 29.6 percent of his drop backs in 2016, the seventh-lowest percentage in the league.

Winston saw his protection get slightly worse in 2016, with his sack rate rising slightly from 4.8 percent (27) to 5.8 percent (35) and his pressure rate rising slightly from 37.6 percent to 38.3 percent. Tampa's young offensive linemen should improve this season, but Tennessee has established one of the best lines in the NFL and the Bucs are not likely to achieve that status in 2017.

He struggled nearly as much as Ogbuehi at the position in 2016, but, the role he was drafted to play. Now, Fisher knows the role he’s expected to step into and he sounds confident in the work he’s putting in this offseason.

Chicago Bears rookie running back Tarik Cohen might have more nicknames than Shaquille O'Neal before long.

Cohen suggested a new nickname for himself,Called the "Human Joystick" in college for his ridiculous, change-of-direction moves, "Chicken Salad" -- for reasons unknown -- when he participated in a draft weekend conference call.

And after rookie minicamp wrapped up on Sunday, Cohen -- listed at 5-foot-6, 179 pounds -- mentioned "Big Daddy" as another acceptable moniker.

What Cohen lacks in size, he makes up for in confidence.

That’s been the story of Cohen’s football career, so much so, that Chicago's fourth-round pick has a ready-made reply for those worried about his frame.

"My response has just been, 'turn on the tape,' you know?" Cohen said.

Cohen's college tape at North Carolina AT&T showed him dominate the FCS level of competition; much to the delight of the Bears, who had been searching for a shifty, change-of-pace rusher to add to their backfield.

"[I know there will be] less cutback lanes [in the NFL]. So as many 80-yarders [as] I had in college, not going to get quite that many on this level. But I still think I could pop out a few here and there. The defense is way faster than the level I was at."

Fox thinks Cohen’s versatility makes him uniquely suited for a third-down role on offense.

"Well, this game's about matchups. We weren't nearly as successful as we needed to be on third down a year ago, he's a joker back, it's just another matchup, so people call it a joker back. It's got a lot of different names," Fox said. "I think third down, but you see similar roles around the league that we really haven't had."
